Great Couple of Days at the Christkindlmarket!

I had a great couple of days at the Christkindlemarket this weekend! It was quite cold, but we had lots of folks stopping by for the Calligraphy and Stone Inscription Carving demonstrations. I was able to personalize Art Legacy League Bookmarks by adding the person's name in Calligraphy. A great time was had by all!

We had a very enjoyable Brush Romans workshop for the 30th annual Letter Exchange Conference in Cambridge, England. The site was Eric Marland's lettercutting workshop, a deconsecrated Victorian chapel in the middle of a Cambridge cemetery containing memorials by Eric Gill, David Kindersley, Eric Marland, Tom Perkins, and many others. My thanks to for the hard work of Matt, Michelle, Jo, Jackie, Lara, Liz, Peter, and Heather who wielded the brush with the ease of a professional sign writer. It was a joy to work with them. I also presented the "Life and Times of Edward M. Catich" lecture at Anglia Ruskin University as part of the conference lecture series. I congratulate everyone who made the Letter Exchange conference a success.

New Classes Offered!

CATFISH Letter Arts School Workshops Announced!!!!

I am pleased to announce that as a Core Faculty Member for The CATFISH Letter Arts School, I will be offering an Introduction to Brush Writing Workshop on December 9, 2017.

The CATFISH Letter Arts School is the working division of The Art Legacy League. During the past year The ALL has been working to establish office, gallery and shop space, and classroom space as part of the JB Young Opportunity Center in Davenport, Iowa. Our offices and gallery space are not yet ready for occupation, but we have classroom space available and have been using it this Summer.

We have organized three workshops through December. MAKING FINE ART PAPERS, October 28th, INTRODUCTION TO CALLIGRAPHY, November 18th, and INTRODUCTION TO BRUSH WRITING, December 9th.

Upcoming Activities and Classes

Paul will be exhibiting and selling work at the Solstice Book Fair in Iowa City tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 pm., see the poster to the right.

This is going to be an amazing fair!  Paul will have prints of his own work as well as the new linoleum block cuts from another Catich student, Bob O'hare.

In addition to the original prints, Paul will be selling Catich prints and books for The Art Legacy League.

Paul has been selected to be an instructor for Black Hawk College's College for Kids Program July 17-21 this year. Paul will be teaching three afternoon sessions every day for Calligraphy, as described in this course description:
(101) Calligraphy

You will learn the strokes, direction, and spacing of decorative lettering. You will experiment with various pens, ink, paint, and colored pencils. Once you learn the fundamentals, you will be able to create a project to take home.  

The College for Kids program has been in existence for five years. For more information about the program and registration information, please see their website by clicking HERE.

This is the first calligraphy course geared towards middle school aged students that Paul has taught in many years. As a member of the core faculty for The Catfish Letter Arts School, a division of The Art Legacy League, Paul is in the process of developing calligraphy and letter arts courses directed towards middle and high school aged students. These courses and workshops will be offered in the coming year through The Art Legacy League's new home located at The JB Young Opportunity Center in Davenport.

This is a photo of the slate that has been included in the next issue of Bound and Lettered that will be highlighting the instructors for A Show of Hands, The 35th International Calligraphy Conference to be held June 25th - July 2nd, 2016 in Swannanoa, North Carolina. I  was an instructor at the very first International Calligraphy Conference held at St. John's University in Minnesota in 1981 and have been an instructor at 5 in total. I will be offering two courses, Inscription Cutting and Brush Romans. 

Below are some examples of what I have been cutting over the past 6 months. Each of these is cut in slate using a carbide tipped chisel.  I cut on the flat after having drawn and traced the letters and designs directly on the stone. The shaped edges were created with a jig saw and a file from templates I created by hand. The letters are gilded with 23K gold leaf and the colours are painted with one shot oil based colours. Each of the slates is sealed with Enrich N Seal.

Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, renowned for bridging Eastern and Western spirituality, is the 2015 Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award recipient. I am very honored to have created the presentation certificate for the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa. Bishop Martin Amos is shown presenting the piece which is a combination of calligraphy, computer graphics and slate inscription.

Summer 2015 Photos-TypeCon and Atlanta!

Paul Herrera took his Imperial Roman brush writing class on the road in July and drove to Denver, Colorado for CONDENSED TypeCon 2015. His one-day workshop was held at the Art Institute of Colorado on the third floor. He used the elevator rather than climb the stairs to get to his classroom. Herrera then gave the opening lecture on Saturday morning at the presentation hall of the Sheraton hotel in downtown Denver. The Life and Times of Edwrad M. Catich featured the published work of Father Catich and pointed out how Catich’s Imperial Romans were used as the model for the Adobe typeface “Trajan.”

Father Catich’s artwork and Herrera’s will be in included in the upcoming Speedball Textbook, 24^th Edition, A Comprehensive guide to Pen& Brush Lettering.

Herrera recently traveled (by airplane this time) to Atlanta, Georgia to conduct a two-day workshop on brush writing. He explained how the Imperial Roman letter form was written and then cut into the marble slab at the base of the Trajan Column in Rome. Students used charts developed by Father Edward Catich to understand the proper proportions of the Roman letter form. They then went through writing drills with the brush before writing out the entire alphabet. The class was held at the beautiful and spacious Sam Flax art supply store in Atlanta. Herrera enjoyed his time with his hosts and the members of the Friends of the Alphabet. He gave the Life and Times illustrated lecture to their monthly meeting on Monday night. He flew home the next day through beautiful weather to the lovely Midwest where he resides.

This workshop will guide you through a hands-on understanding of the Imperial Roman Alphabet as you utilize an inside-out approach to these timeless letterforms. You will learn the special characteristics and ‘personality’ of the brush as contrasted with hard-tool calligraphy while practicing the essential elements of the classical Roman. Before the workshop is done you will move on to writing out the entire alphabet in the same manner as the ancient Roman inscription maker would do prior to cutting the letters in stone. A short inscription cutting demonstration will be provided as an addition to the class.

An illustrated lecture by Paul Herrera

Reverend Edward M. Catich has an international reputation as a calligrapher, teacher, scholar and artist. He was also a professional Chicago sign painter and musician in the 1920’s while he attended the Art Institute. In addition to being an artist, Catich was also an accomplished musician! Many of Father Catich’s works will be shown as illustrations of his life during the presentation. Paul Herrera was a student, apprentice and friend of Father Catich. He traveled with him, worked with him and taught with him at the Davenport Municipal Art Gallery in Davenport, Iowa.

SLATE INSCRIPTION CUTTING
Four-Day Class, Monday, July 27 – Friday, July 31All LevelsLettering

This class will introduce the novice to the use of a mallet and chisel to carve V-cut letters or designs into slate in the style of ancient classical inscription cutting. Students will learn the basics of cutting straight lines, curves and how to join the two in creating letters. Instruction will be given on how to layout practice strokes, select mallets and chisels and how to transfer their personal designs onto slate prior to carving. Mallets and ¼ inch chisels will be provided for class use and they will also be available for purchase for students to take home if they so desire. Students will have a choice of a 5″ x 7″ or 8″ x 10″ piece of slate to work on for their final project. Each student will take home a slate that they have carved. I will display my own finished cut inscriptions for use as models in the classroom.

Supply List

• Students will bring their own lettering/design on paper for a 5″ x 7″ or 8″ x 10″ flat stone
• 1 fluid oz. jar of Dr. Martin’s bleedproof white
• Ball point pen
• #1 soft-bristle spotter brush
• One bottle of black India ink
• Acrylic paint (if desired) for painting the finished cut letters

Mallets, ¼ inch chisels, select pieces of slate, and miscellaneous finishing materials will be provided by the instructor.
